Candle accessories turn ordinary lighting into a small ritual while also extending the life of your candles. In this category you will find wick trimmers, elegant candle snuffers and wick dippers — metal tools that take care of a clean flame, even burning and safe extinguishing. They are made from durable materials such as stainless steel or brass, so they easily withstand the proximity of fire and hot wax. Whether you have scented candles in glass, tea lights or decorative pillar candles at home, the right tools help you get the most out of them — they will burn longer, cleaner and without unnecessary smoke.

Candle Accessories

Candle accessories are small tools with a big impact. The way you light, trim and extinguish a candle directly affects how long and how nicely it burns. A few seconds of care before each lighting can extend a candle's life by tens of percent, prevent the glass from blackening and keep the scent clean, without a burnt smell. Metal helpers also allow you to work safely in the immediate vicinity of an open flame and hot wax.

Why it pays to care for the wick and flame

A wick that is too long burns with a high, unstable flame that smokes and deposits soot on the walls of the container, while one that is too short can drown in the wax. The ideal wick length before lighting is roughly 5 to 6 millimetres — that is when the flame is calm and the wax burns evenly. This is exactly what the wick trimmer (wick scissors) is for: its curved shape and longer arm comfortably reach even the bottom of a deep glass container, and they catch the trimmed piece so it does not fall into the wax. Regular trimming is the most effective way to prevent both sooting and so-called tunnelling, where the candle burns only in the centre and untouched wax remains around the edges.

How to choose candle accessories

The material is the foundation. Quality tools are made of stainless steel or brass — they withstand heat, do not rust and endure repeated contact with hot wax. The surface finish, whether polished metal, matte black or gold, is a matter of taste and interior. The second key tool is the candle snuffer — a small bell on a thin handle that covers the flame and cuts off its air supply. The candle thus goes out calmly, without blowing, which would spray hot wax and spread smoke around the room. It is especially appreciated by anyone with candles deep in a container or in taller candle holders, where the flame would otherwise be hard to reach. A gentler alternative is the wick dipper: you simply dip the wick into the melted wax and lift it out straight away, the flame goes out without smoke and the wick stays coated in wax, ready for the next easy lighting. If you enjoy candles regularly, it is worth reaching for a set that combines several tools in one package — it also makes a popular gift for anyone who loves scented candles and a cosy atmosphere.

What to watch out for when using them

Always use the tools mindful that you are working close to fire and hot wax. Trim the wick on a cooled candle before lighting, never during burning, and remove the trimmed piece from the wax so it does not impair the burn. After extinguishing, hold the snuffer over the wick for a moment so the flame goes out completely, and only then lift the bell. Once cooled, wipe the metal parts with a dry cloth — this removes soot and wax residue, and the tool will last you for years. Such a short routine will keep your candles more beautiful, safer and with a cleaner scent every time you light them.

How to choose

Not every accessory does the same thing — some take care of the wick, others of safe extinguishing. Choose based on what candles you use and how often, or reach for a complete set that covers all the tasks at once. The table below compares the most common types of tools and suggests who each one suits best.

Type Feature Suitable for
Wick trimmer (wick scissors) Shortens the wick to the ideal 5–6 mm and catches the trimmed piece Everyday maintenance and candles in deep containers
Candle snuffer Extinguishes the flame without blowing, wax splatter and smoke Deep jars and taller candle holders
Wick dipper Dips the wick into the wax, extinguishes it without smoke and coats it for the next lighting Smoke-free extinguishing and easy relighting
Tool set Combines several functions in one package Complete care and a gift for a candle lover

When buying, consider the depth of your containers — with tall jars you will appreciate a longer handle — and the surface finish (matte black, gold, steel), so the accessories match your interior.

Safety warning in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety

Candle accessories (wick trimmers, snuffers and metal tools) are used near open flame and hot wax. Improper use may result in burns, cuts or fire. Follow these instructions:

  • Wick trimmers and metal tools have sharp edges and tips – keep them out of the reach of children and pets and use them only for their intended purpose.
  • Trim the wick when the candle is extinguished or just before lighting to approximately 5–7 mm; an overly long wick causes a high flame, sooting and wax spattering.
  • Metal parts heat up quickly on contact with the flame and hot wax – handle them only by the handle and let them cool down completely before putting them away.
  • Extinguish the candle with the snuffer – gently cover the flame until it goes out completely and do not blow on it, to prevent wax spattering and flying sparks.
  • Do not expose hot wax or heated parts to contact with the skin; in case of a burn, immediately cool the affected area with cold water.
  • Never leave a burning candle or work with the tools unattended; work on a stable, non-flammable surface away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials.
  • After use, clean the tools of wax residue, store them in a dry place out of the reach of children and do not treat the product as a toy.

If the tool is damaged (loose or blunt blade, broken or deformed part), do not use the product any further.
