Candle Vessels (empty)

Empty candle containers are a great foundation for your own creations. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced candle maker, the right container affects not only the appearance but also the safety and burn time of the candle. In the following lines, we will advise you on what to consider when choosing.

How to Choose the Right Candle Container

When selecting a container, consider the material, size, and shape. Glass containers are popular for their heat resistance and aesthetics – they allow you to observe the flame and melted wax. Ceramic containers, on the other hand, excel in design and better heat retention. Wall thickness is also important: thinner walls heat up faster, which can shorten the candle's lifespan. The container size should match the amount of wax and burn time – smaller containers (e.g., 100 ml) are suitable for short candles up to 20 hours, larger ones (500 ml) for long evenings up to 80 hours. For scented candles, we recommend containers with lids to preserve the fragrance longer. For example, a 200 ml glass container with a lid is perfect for a lavender-scented candle that will fill a small room with aroma for about 40 hours.

Materials and Their Properties

Glass

Glass containers are the most common choice. They are transparent, easy to clean, and withstand temperatures up to 200 °C. The downside is fragility – they can break if dropped. They are suitable for candles with low to medium wax melting points (e.g., soy wax). When using paraffin, opt for thicker walls to prevent overheating. A practical tip: use a glass container with a wide opening (e.g., 8 cm diameter) for easier wick centering and even wax melting.

Ceramic

Ceramic containers look luxurious and have excellent thermal insulation. They are heavier and more stable, reducing the risk of tipping over. However, they require more careful handling as they can crack under sudden cooling. They are ideal for gift candles where design is paramount. For instance, a hand-painted ceramic container makes a unique birthday present.

Aluminum

Aluminum containers are lightweight, durable, and inexpensive. They conduct heat quickly, making them suitable for tea lights or short-burning candles. However, they are not suitable for repeated use as they can deform. They are great for events like weddings where you need many small candles.

Maintenance and Safety Tips

Before first use, thoroughly wash and dry the container. When making the candle, ensure the wick is properly positioned and the wax is poured at the recommended temperature (e.g., soy wax 70–80 °C). After the candle burns out, clean the container with hot water and soap – wax residues can be easily removed. For glass containers, you can also remove wax residues by placing them in the freezer for 30 minutes – the wax shrinks and pops out easily. Never leave a burning candle unattended and place it on a heat-resistant surface. Do not use a container with cracks. Always trim the wick to 5 mm before lighting to prevent soot and ensure an even burn.

Large candles (long burn)Thick-walled glassExperienced makers

Before purchasing, check:

  • Container diameter – should match the wick size (e.g., 6–7 cm diameter = wick #3; 8–9 cm = wick #4).
  • Heat resistance – at least 100 °C, ideally 150 °C for safety, especially for paraffin wax.
  • Ease of cleaning – smooth walls facilitate maintenance; avoid textured interiors.
  • Aesthetics – the container should complement your interior or match the occasion.
  • Volume – 100 ml for short candles (up to 20 hours), 300 ml for medium (up to 50 hours), 500 ml for long burn (up to 80 hours).
  • Lid availability – for scented candles, a lid helps preserve fragrance between uses.

Important safety warning for candle holders and candle containers in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety (GPSR)

This is a targeted safety warning for the proper and safe use of candle holders and candle containers — including tea light holders, pillar candle holders, and empty candle containers. Please read these instructions carefully before first use and keep them for the entire lifespan of the product.

Basic principles of safety and handling

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets: A candle holder with a burning candle is a source of open flame and hot surfaces. Ensure that children and pets do not have access to it. There is a risk of burns, tipping over, and fire.
  • Never leave a candle holder with a burning candle unattended: Always extinguish the candle before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Placement: Place the candle holder on a flat, stable, and non-flammable surface. Always place a non-flammable pad (ceramic plate, stone slab, metal tray) under the candle holder — this protects furniture from overheating and potential wax drips.
  • Distance from flammable materials: Maintain a minimum distance of 30 cm from curtains, textiles, flowers, books, and other flammable items.

Proper and safe use

  • Check before each use: Before inserting the candle, check the candle holder or container for cracks, chips, glaze damage, or other defects. Do not use a damaged candle holder — it may crack or break when heated.
  • Correct candle size: Only insert a candle of the appropriate size and type into the candle holder. The candle must fit securely and not extend beyond the edges of the candle holder. A candle that is too large may cause overheating, while one that is too small may tip over.
  • Hot surface — do not move during burning: The candle holder becomes significantly heated during the burning of the candle. Never move it while there is a burning candle or liquid wax inside. Allow the candle holder to cool completely before any handling (at least 30 minutes after extinguishing).
  • Thermal shock — risk of cracking: Glass and ceramic candle holders are sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Do not place a hot candle holder on a cold surface, do not pour cold water on it, and do not expose it to direct drafts. Thermal shock can cause cracking or breaking, posing a risk of injury and fire.
  • Tea lights in metal cases: The metal case of the tea light becomes very hot during burning. Ensure that the candle holder transfers heat evenly and does not lead to local overheating.
  • Pillar candles: For pillar candle holders, ensure that the holder has a sufficiently large plate or bowl to catch the dripping wax. Dripping wax can damage furniture surfaces and cause burns upon contact with skin.

Cleaning, maintenance, and storage

  • Removing wax: Always remove wax residues only after the candle holder has completely cooled down. Gently scrape off the hardened wax with a wooden or plastic spatula. Never use hot water on cold glass — there is a risk of breaking due to thermal shock.
  • Alternative cleaning method: Place the candle holder in the freezer for 1 – 2 hours — the wax will shrink and easily separate. Alternatively, pour hot water into the container and let the wax melt and float to the surface, but only if the container is at room temperature.
  • Cleaning agents: For general cleaning, use warm water with a mild detergent. Do not use aggressive chemicals, abrasive sponges, or steel wool that may damage the surface, glaze, or glass.
  • Storage: Store candle holders in a dry place, protected from impacts. Wrap glass and ceramic candle holders in soft material when storing to prevent chipping or breaking.

Specific health warnings

  • Risk of injury: In case of breakage or shattering of the candle holder, sharp shards may occur. Handle broken parts carefully, use gloves, and dispose of shards safely.
  • Burns: A hot candle holder can cause burns upon contact. If you come into contact with a hot surface, cool the affected area immediately under running cold water for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention for more serious burns.
  • Child safety: Glass and ceramic candle holders are fragile. If they break, sharp pieces pose a cutting hazard. Keep out of reach of small children.
  • Material composition: Candle holders may be made of glass, ceramic, metal, concrete, or combinations thereof. Check the product description in case of known sensitivity to any material.

Disposal

  • Undamaged candle holders and containers can be reused. If damaged (cracks, chips), withdraw the candle holder from use.
  • Dispose of glass candle holders in the glass container (after removing wax residues and any metal parts).
  • Ceramic candle holders are not recyclable like glass — dispose of them in general waste or according to local regulations.
  • Dispose of metal parts in the metal container.
  • Dispose of packaging materials (cardboard, paper, foil) in the appropriate containers for sorted waste.

Incidents and contact

  • In the event of an incident related to the use of the candle holder or candle container (cracking, breaking, burns, fire, etc.), stop using the product immediately. Keep the product and proof of purchase for processing the complaint.
